Fortuna 'Clip-On' Bluetooth GPS receiver

This unit features both the lower power using SiRF Star IIe/LP chipset and the very latest SiRF Xtrac firmware which offers amazing sensitivity to GPS signals. Switching between the two systems ensures that battery life can be extended for up to 8.5 hours using the SiRF Star IIe/LP chipset when good signal strength is available, while the SiRF Xtrac functionality can be engaged when travelling in more challenging signal areas such as under heavy leaf cover or between tall buildings in 'urban canyons'. This high sensitivity mode can even provide a signal lock while indoors.

Combined with Bluetooth technology, the Clip-On GPS provides the convenience of wirefree navigation when used with a suitable PDA or laptop.

In practice the standard SiRF Star IIe/LP chipset is used for in-car navigation where the unit has a clear view of the sky on open roads. Presenting a light load to the host CPU, maps rotate and scroll quickly as motorway junctions are approached even at high speed. Where the signal strength is degraded, such as in dense urban areas, below flyovers or when used as a recreational GPS for walking in forested areas, the SiRF Xtrac functionality comes into it’s own. In almost all situations a full array of satellite signals will be acquired allowing a positional lock to be established. In this XT mode maps update slightly slower, due to the increased stream of signal data to be processed, the lag is barely noticeable at low speeds

Three LED's on the top of the unit indicate an active Bluetooth connection, GPS and power status. The unit is small and light enough to be carried on top of a backpack, or on an arm strap in comfort.
