Scotland’s Abbeys and cathedrals
Hubert Fenwick
Robert Hale Limited 1978. Hård pärm 288 sidor. Inplastat omslag. Mycket gott skick.
ISBN 0709163746
”In Scotland only two cathedrals, no abbeys and only one priory survive in anything like their pre-reformation form. Yet despite the depredations of time and man Scotland retains a quite remarkable residue of ecclesiastical architecture which deserves to be better known. In Galloway one can see part of a stone church built by St Ninian in the early 5th century, while the Irish mission t o Iona was directly related to the collapse of Roman power and the ability of the Celtic monks to carry the torch to other regions.
With the sacking of Iona by the Danes the monks fled to Dunkeld, but for substantial evidence of early Christian building in Scotland one must go to Brechin, in Angus, where Northumbrian masons were engaged. It is to Northern England also that one must turn for the design of the abbey at Dunfermline and the cathedral at Kirkwall, the finest example of Norman architecture in Scotland. Dunblane was begun by David I, whose other foundations included the Abbey of Cambuskenneth, Dundrennen, Holyrood and the celebrated Border houses of Jedbergh, Kelso and Melrose.
The last Scottish cathedral to be built before the reformation was Fortrose, on the Black Ilse, and the last Abbey Dulci Corde, or Sweetheart, in Galoway. Since then St Giles High Kirk in Edinburgh was raised to cathedral status in Carolean times, and largely under the influence of the Oxford Movement a number of interesting gothic-revival and neo-medieval cathedrals were built in the 19th century.”
Rikligt illustrerad med svartvita fotografier och ritningar!
