ABSTRACT:
The papers in this volume all deal with the Stone age in the Baltic Sea region. A common denominator has been the studies of material culture and site structures, in the light of contacts and changes over time. Several authors deal with problems associated with the interpretation of Neolithic cultures. Larsson (Å. M.) discusses the Middle Neolithic in eastern central Sweden, in the light of ceramic traditions. Björck means that archaeological cultures in eastern Sweden and southern swedish Norrland should be viewed against cosmologic and ideologic perspectives. Papmehl-Dufay claims a similar perspective, and discusses the archaeological concept of cultures in relation to the Middle Neolithic coastal societies in eastern Sweden, especially on the island of Öland. Social and ideological preferences are also at hand in the text by Guinard and Wikell, who deal with the neolithisation, by discussing two case areas in eastern middle Sweden. Here, contact is of central importance. The concept of contact is also arguede by Carlsson, who discusses Mesolithic contact in south-eastern Sweden, and makes clear the influence of material culture on socio-cultural identities. Lindström makes clear some aspects of contacts between Denmark, Sweden and Finland during the Middle Neolithic, by discussing geographical and chronological distribution of battle axes. Holm (L.) shows new perspectives on the Neolithic site Hedningahällan, in eastern Sweden. The site is put into regional and interregional contexts when arguing about contact in the Bothnian region. Concerning site interpretation, several articles deal with different aspects of settlement organisation and site structures. Rankama is writing about microscope analyses of a quartz tool assemblage from the Mesolithic Kauvonkangas site in Tervola, southern finnish Lapland, and the result of spatial analyses. Kankaanpää deals with excavations of house pits from the same site, and writes about settlement organisation over time. Samuelsson and Ytterberg present new perspectives on settlement organisation and activity areas at the destroyed Middle Neolithic Hemmor site on Gotland, Sweden, based on a combination of different field methods. Settlement organisation is also discussed by Larsson (M.), who writes about the Pitted Ware site of Åby in middle Sweden, and the understanding of material culture. Here, the connection with social contexts is evident. Holm ( J.) discusses microblades in Mesolithic assemblages in middle Sweden, and possible indications of social structures. Manninen, Tallavaara and Hertell present research history of finnish flint studies, together with a discussion of a Comb Ware lithic assemblage from the Vihi site in northern finnish Karela, in the light of social organisation. Berzins presents analysis and classification of Middle Neolithic pottery from Sarnate, western Latvia, in the light of chronology and function. A somewhat similar perspective is represented by Graner, who describes reconstructional work and form analysis of Funnel beaker pottery from eastern middle Sweden, and how the pottery should be interpreted.
