Background and description:
Camphor tree
Camphora officinarum is a species of evergreen tree that is commonly known under the names camphor tree. It is native to China south of the Yangtze River, Taiwan, southern Japan, Korea, India, and Vietnam, and has been introduced to many other countries. It grows up to 20–30 m (66–98 ft) tall.
The leaves have a glossy, waxy appearance and smell of camphor when crushed
Camphor tree is cultivated for camphor and timber production. Production was a major industry in Taiwan before and during the Japanese colonial era (1895–1945). It was used medicinally and was also an important ingredient in the production of smokeless gunpowder and celluloid. Camphor was one of the most lucrative of several important government monopolies under the Japanese.
The wood has a nice natural smell (camphor) and has an insect-repellent quality. It was used widely in East Asian countries as insect-repellers in the closet.

Carbonized surface
The Far East ancient technique of wood carbonization dates from hundreds of years ago, originally invented in China and then widely spread to Japan and Korea. These countries have a long history of building wood structure architecture. This technology is used both for daily life products and architecture. It is called Shou Sugi Ban in Japanese. Its fame and appeal have spread across the globe thanks to the impressive quality the charring process provides and its rustic and elegant appearance.
After the surface layer of the wood has been sufficiently charred, its appearance and characteristics change. Then again, this technology is far from a forcefully preserved antique with no modern-day value. Shou Sugi Ban is a very versatile product. With many timeless qualities, charred wood ensures an exclusive beauty to your life, with this rustic and wabi-sabi style.
Since it is charred, it is water-repellent. Perfect to use as tray to serve tea or serve coffee.
