The Beatlesappearance in Australia was booked by promoter Kenn Brodziak almosta year in advance during a talent buying expedition in London. Thiswas before Beatlemania hit and in the ensuing year the act hitinternational superstardom including Australia. They arrived inDarwin on June 11th and were greeted by 400 fans. But when theyflew into Adelaide the following day there were an estimated350,000 people to greet the band, queuing for the 15 kilometresfrom the airport to the hotel. For the opening dates they wereaccompanied by Jimmy Nicol on drums for the hospitalized Ringo.However Ringo rejoined the group in time for the Melbourne datesand Paul even welcomes him back on stage. This disc features twoshows tha band did at the Festival Hall in Melbourne, finallycomplete. These shows were both taped by Australian Radio and TV.But only 9 songs from the 16 June concert were aired as part of the“Beatles Sing For Shell” Australian TV Special. The disc opens withthe show from the 16th of June which has the far superior sound ofthe two. The second show was taped the night after, the 17th ofJune of 1964, which was the last date inMelbourne.
