Heinz Wilhelm Guderian ( 17 June 1888 – 14 May 1954) was a German general during World War ll. An early pioneer and advocate of the "blitzkrieg" doctrine, he became chief of staff to the Inspectorate of Motorized Troops under Oswald Lutz in 1931. During World War II, Guderian successfully led panzer (armoured) units during the Invasion of Polan and the Battle of Franxe. He led the 2nd panzer army during Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. The campaign ended with a German defeat at the Battle of Moscow, after which Guderian was dismissed.
