English Botany was a large publication of British plants consisting of a 36 volume set, published in 267 monthly sections over 23 years from 1790 to 1814. The work was conceived, illustrated, edited and published by the botanical illustrator and natural historian, James Sowerby. The brief formal technical descriptions were mostly provided by the founder of the Linnean Society, Sir James Edward Smith. Initially, Smith had refused to have his name associated with the work because he felt that his professional collaboration with a socially inferior craftsman like Sowerby could worsen his position in higher circles. However, after the phenomenal public success and the general acceptance of the professional class of the work, he insisted that the title page in the fourth and subsequent volumes credited the work to his name with Sowerby exclusively as illustrator. However, the work continued to be commonly referred to as "Sowerby's botany". Despite this abuse of Smith's social class differences, the two men were good friends and worked happily together on several projects for many years. The work was printed by J. Davis, London.

James Sowerby (21 March 1757 - 25 October 1822) was an English naturalist, illustrator and mineralogist. Contributions to published works, such as A Copy of New Holland Botany or English Botany, include his detailed and appealing plates. The use of vibrant color and accessible texts was intended to reach a wider audience in natural history works. The standard author's abbreviation Sowerby is used to indicate this person as the author when quoting a botanical name.
