ABOUT THE ARTIST
António João Ferreira Pinto Basto (Évora, Sé and São Pedro, May 6, 1952), known as António Pinto Basto, is a Portuguese fado singer.
António Pinto Basto became interested in Fado at 13 years old. One night his parents took him to a night of fados at the Salesian Fair of Évora and Pinto Basto and his sister, decided to recreate that atmosphere and improvise a retreat in the garage of the house, Toca, in honor of Carlos Ramos' house.
António Pinto Basto had access to the poems of his maternal grandfather, João Vasconcellos e Sá, and as such, from an early age, sang original lyrics in traditional fados. His uncle, José de Vasconcellos e Sá, after passing the Toca on one of the party nights, enjoying his nephew's interpreting skills, decides to enroll him in the Great Night of Fado. Aged 16, António Pinto participated in this contest, as representative of Casa do Alentejo. At the same time also had the experience of singing in fado houses. Remember, for example, that you did it on Timpanas.
It is also through this uncle who records the first album in 1970. An EP edited by Alvorada, featuring lyrics from grandfather and uncle and songs from traditional fado (Fado Franklin, Fado Vitória, Fado Dois Tons and Fado das Horas). At that time he also went to some television programs and gave interviews. He was only 17 when, with this first album, he began his career. In 1972 and 1973 he recorded two more EPs.
António Pinto Basto eventually devoted himself exclusively to Fado, after recording in 1988 the greatest success of his career - "Rosa Branca", a fado written by his grandfather João, whose sales reached platinum and yielded about 120 shows. in just one year, and gave 73 interviews. It became unbearable to maintain his professional activity as an employee of the National Steel Industry, which he decided to leave at the end of 1989. That year he edited another album, Maria (1989), which repeated the bestseller.
Confidences to the Guitar was published in 1991. Following is the collection The Great Successes of António Pinto Basto (1993) and Since the Cradle (1996).
