About the Brand

Polo Country was Ralph Lauren’s short-lived but legendary line, produced exclusively from 1989 to 1993. It was a raw and rugged vision of early Americana—heavily inspired by frontier wear, Western ranch gear, and workwear from the early 20th century.

After its short run, Polo Country evolved into what we now know as RRL (Double RL). Many collectors see Polo Country as the true beginning of Ralph Lauren’s most authentic vintage-style craftsmanship.

Just a random memory from my past:
When I was in military high school, I went to a second-hand store and met a super cool, imposing middle-aged man. I struck up a conversation with him because I thought he might be the CEO of the legendary Japanese vintage magazine Free & Easy. (Sadly, it’s no longer in publication. If you ever come across copies, I highly recommend collecting them before they skyrocket in price—some issues are already getting expensive.)

He never confirmed his identity, but now that I have access to the internet and can look back more clearly, I’m almost certain it was him.

At that shop, he recommended a Polo Country native-pattern knit to me. Strangely, I wasn’t interested in it at the time. I still regret not picking it up. That could’ve been my first encounter with Polo Country—and what a way to start.

But that’s the magic of vintage, isn’t it?
