The Commodore 64 has one of the most sophisticated sound generation systems of any home micro, based on the SID, or Sound Interface Device. In this book Ian Waugh shows how you can take advantage of this powerful facility to develop a wide range of musical applications on the Commodore 64. Explanations are included to help anyone with no musical experience.
All the programs are written in BASIC and their operation is fully described, line by line, so that newcomers to computing can understand them, while more advanced users have a framework on which to build their own routines.
The book covers the elements of music, and includes programs to produce chorus, echo, polyphonic music, microtonal scales — even sound effects like seagulls and foghorns. You can play your micro as a keyboard instrument, improvise over a bass, turn a tune upside down, and the C64 will even produce and play Its own compositions.
Ian Waugh is a self-taught professional musician, whose interests cover most areas of music. He is author of Making Music on the BBC Computer and a regular contributor to Popular Computing Weekly and a number of other computer and music magazines.
