Original business card photography from the 1850s from Sweden.

Carte de visite (sometimes in Swedish business card portraits) was a kind of small photographs that were patented in 1854 in Paris, France, by the photographer André Adolphe Disdéri.

Photographs in the form of "Carte de visite" immediately became popular in May, 1859 when (according to an unconfirmed but often repeated anecdote) photographer Disdéri had the good fortune to be in the right place at the right time when Napoleon III interrupted his march to pose for a photograph in Disdéri's studio. A few years earlier, in 1854, Disdéri had also patented a method for taking eight separate negatives on a single plate. The photographs were made in the size of a business card, and - largely due to Napoleon III's visit to Disdéri's studio - such photographs became very popular and were exchanged between friends and visitors. Photographs of prominent people were sold by photographers and paper merchants and became collectibles and filled photo albums. Through large-scale production, the price of photos was kept low, and they became very widespread at the end of the 19th century. The British annual sales of credit cards alone in the 1860s were between 300 million and 400 million copies. The courage came to Sweden around 1860.
