Iittala Timo Sarpaneva, Arkipelago Rulla candle holder figurine

Iconic Arkipelago candleholder figurine by one of the most renowned Scandinavian designers, Timo Sarpaneva. Arkipelago resembles a massive piece of ice with bubbles inside – incredibly beautiful. An organic design that incorporates some of the most symbolic elements of Scandinavian nature.

Condition:
Good vintage condition. The candlestick has a very tiny chip on the inner side along the seam line. It appears to be related to the production process, likely occurring when the piece (or its blank) was detached from the mold, rather than from later use. Please, refer to last 2 photos. This detail is nevertheless reflected in the item’s price.

Sarpaneva worked as a designer at the Iittala art glass factory. He was celebrated as a sculptor and an industrial designer. Sarpaneva created numerous series of art glass and crystal pieces that became global classics.

In 1956 and 1957, he won the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale, along with many other prestigious international design awards. He was honored with Finland’s highest award, the Pro Finlandia Medal. He also held positions as a professor and honorary professor at the Royal College of Art in London and the Aalto University School of Design in Helsinki.
