Masque,from Leicester, England, released their vinyl only EP in 1988 and,in truth, probably 3 or 4 years too late to get the best from theirmusical style. Great female vocals and extremely competentmusicians make for some killer tunes in an early Maiden/Chastainstyle. Lots of of energy and rage, very intense lyrics, a grippingatmosphere and choruses that you can’t help but sing along to. Thelyrics deal with revenge, hate, madness and death. Jo Phipps has anequally intense vocal delivery, with a deep and rich voice. Nothingwrong with this effort at all except it was trying to shine in ametal world which, by then, was largely dominated by the hair metalexplosion. In this environment Masque, along with others, (Slanderfor example) failed to break through. Of course now listeners areback tracking, finding these hidden gems and as a result originalcopies are worth a small fortune. This reissue is of the highestquality, featuring the original EP backed up by demo tracks fromthe same year. If you’re into bands like Chastain, Blacklace, Bitchor even earlier Warlock material this is a band worth checkingout…..you won’t be disappointed.
