A remarkable antique chest ornament, likely from the Tibetan / Himalayan cultural region, including areas such as Tibet, Ladakh, Nepal, or neighbouring highland communities. This type of large decorated textile ornament was traditionally worn over the chest as part of ceremonial or ethnic dress, functioning not only as decoration but also as a display of wealth, status, protection, and personal identity.

The piece has the powerful presence associated with Himalayan jewellery traditions: bold turquoise-coloured stones, red coral or coral-like beads, shell or mother-of-pearl elements, small red glass seed beads, and a large circular central medallion with turquoise mosaic-style inlay.

Due to the nature of ethnographic jewellery, exact regional attribution and dating are difficult without provenance, but the construction, handwork, materials, patina, and overall surface age strongly suggest an old, authentic tribal / ceremonial object rather than a modern decorative reproduction.

Material:

Hand-sewn textile base with a simple cloth backing.

Decorated with a mixture of turquoise or turquoise-type stones, red coral or coral-like beads, shell / mother-of-pearl style beads, red glass seed beads, brown polished beads, and a central metal medallion with turquoise mosaic inlay.

The stones and beads are irregular in shape and size, which gives the piece a much older and more organic character than modern machine-made costume jewellery. The red tube beads show surface wear, chips, dirt, and age-darkened areas. The white shell-like beads also show natural variation, patina, and unevenness.

The backing is hand-stitched and shows clear age, wear, and darkening from use.

Design:

A highly decorative crescent-shaped chest ornament with strong visual balance and excellent display presence.

The centre features a circular medallion with turquoise mosaic-style inlay arranged in concentric rings. This mandala-like form gives the piece a strong symbolic and protective feeling, fitting well with Himalayan amulet and jewellery traditions.

The outer border is densely worked with rows of small red beads, creating a strong frame around the whole piece. Inside the border, larger turquoise-coloured stones, red coral-like beads, shell elements, and brown beads are arranged in symmetrical sections around the centre.

The shape sits beautifully on the chest and also works exceptionally well as a wall-hung or mannequin-displayed object. It has the feeling of an ethnographic art object rather than ordinary jewellery.

Very good overall condition for an antique ethnographic textile ornament.

There is age-related wear throughout, including patina, darkening, surface dirt, oxidation, textile wear, small chips, rubbed beads, and a few damaged or partially missing beads. Some areas of the red beads and coral-like beads show visible wear and losses to the surface.

The backing is hand-sewn and aged, with staining and wear consistent with long-term use and storage.

Despite the age and small losses, the piece remains visually strong, complete in overall impression, and beautifully preserved as a decorative antique object.
