Bateaux Jouets 1850-1950 - Musée national de la Marine

En påkostad utställningskatalog från marinmuseet i Paris 2007.

From the unique collection of toy boats, to play with at home, sail on the pond or in the ocean; showcase dreams of adventure on the high seas. The toys represent 100 years in the evolution of ships and lifestyles and the stories of transatlantic sea voyages, underwater exploration, sea battles, sailing regattas and motor boat races. They range in style from simple paper boats to stunning mechanical marvels with the ability to propel themselves across a carpet, a pond or even an open bay. The exhibition looks at toy boats as playthings at home … lead flotillas, figurines, boats to build, boats to play with on the floor, board games, historical dioramas and lots more.

The rapid industrialisation in Europe from the mid 1800s and the growth of the mechanical engineering industry led to the mass production of increasingly sophisticated metal toys. German manufacturers were first on the scene, followed by the French, who proceeded embark on a lengthy trade war. Shipping developments were a major source of inspiration for toy boat manufacturers from transatlantic liners, battleships to speedboats, all propelled by a diverse range of technologies.

Boats provided endless entertainment opportunities for children, sailing boats on ponds, rivers and at the seaside; mechanical boats; at home building models and playing with toy boats on wheels. Manufacturers often highlighted the educational aspect of their toys, emphasizing the different mechanism used to propel toy boats.

Children were not the only ones interested in playing with toy boats - with examples of boats in which the sheer weight, cost and complexity relegated them to the adult world. This exhibition brought generations together with its display of more than 200 boats and maritime toys.
