Beskrivning
Unknown author or not provided - Buchenwald, Germany, Inmates resting on the barrack bunks after the liberation, 16/04/1945.
Gelatin silver print
Dimensions: 24.2 x 17.9 cm
Condition good - small inperfection
These are slave laborers in the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar; many had died from malnutrition when U.S. troops of the 80th Division entered the camp. The very ill man lying at the back on the lower bunk was thought to be Max Hamburger, but this is probably not true. Second row, seventh from left is Elie Wiesel. Photograph taken 5 days after rescue.
On the photo:
- Meijer (Max) Hamburger (Amsterdam, February 10, 1920 – Maastricht, July 2, 2012) was a Dutch psychiatrist of Jewish descent. He was a resistance fighter during World War II and a survivor of the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps.
- Melvin Mermelstein (born Moric Mermelstein; September 25, 1926 – January 28, 2022) was a Czechoslovak-born American Holocaust survivor and autobiographer. A Jew, he was the sole survivor of his family's extermination at Auschwitz concentration camp.
He is best known for his litigation with the Institute for Historical Review over evidence of gas chambers in German concentration camps during World War II. The legal dispute was resolved in Mermelstein's favor, without the court giving an opinion on the merits of the dispute, since it ruled that the existence of gas chambers at Auschwitz is a legally indisputable fact.
- Eliezer "Elie" Wiesel (September 30, 1928 – July 2, 2016) was a Romanian-born American writer, professor, political activist, Nobel laureate, and Holocaust survivor. He authored 57 books, written mostly in French and English, including Night, which is based on his experiences as a Jewish prisoner at Auschwitz and Buchenwald during the Holocaust.
