Motivated in part by the question of how the Holocaust could have occurred, the writer Marion L. Starkey examined the Salem archives to investigate the roots of an earlier American tragedy: the Salem witch trials. Drawing on the court records, she produced a psychological study tracing the progression from childish fantasies to full-blown social hysteria. First published in 1949, The Devil in Massachusetts has remained a classic in the field. Arthur Miller is said to have consulted this work while researching for his playwright of the trials: The Crucible.
