In early 1998 Zakk Wylde, Mike Inez andRandy Castillo were hired by Ozzy Osbourne for a tour in NewZealand, Australia and Japan but when the band returned from Japanthey were all let go without reason. Zakk went to Italy in earlyMay and did a one-off show by himself before calling up the drummerPhil Ondich and what became Sonic Brew was recorded in May 1998 inMiami, Florida. Zakk and Phil decided to call the band Hell’sKitchen and the album was to be called Sonic Brewery. Phil designedall of the artwork and did the booklet layout for the album butafter a few weeks they decided to change their name to Black LabelSociety since they were unable to get a trademark for the Hell’sKitchen moniker. Sonic Brew was released in Japan in 1998 and inUsa in 1999. The band needed a bass player and Zakk put an ad inall guitar magazines. However, he found no-one of interest andinstead he hired his long-time friend and former Pride And Gloryreplacement bassist J.D. All this time Nick Catanese had been inthe band as well. The band did their first show ever in Japan onMay 1st, 1999, at Club Quattro, Shibuya Tokyo. After a Japanesetour the band went to Europe and did the Dynamo Open Air in frontof their largest crowd ever. The set list was made by five tracksfrom their debut album, two Pride And Glory tracks and one Ozzycover. Fans of early Wylde material need this one
