Not content with his Kreator’s already-established reputation asperhaps Germany’s top thrash metal band of the 1980s, groupmastermind Mille Petrozza spent much of the 1990s attempting toreinvent and diversify their sound, most obviously by pushing theindustrial metal envelope. Alas, all to no avail, as the majorityof fans were not impressed with the mostly mediocre results heardon confused albums like Renewal and Cause for Conflict. Even thewelcome addition of guitar ace Tommy Vetterli (ex-Coroner) lentmore consistency than actual sparks to 1997’s Outcast, and 1999’ssimilarly dependable but hardly impressive Endorama eventuallyfollowed suit. Initial highlights such as “Golden Age,” the titletrack, and “Chosen Few” are heavy on mid-paced grooves and gothicatmospherics, but still offer little song writing redemption. Forall their studiously constructed lyrics and supposed compositionalmaturity, they absolutely scream for some sign, any sign, of deeperemotion to snap them out of their glazed state of performedautomation. Not even the keyboards that pervade the highlyunorthodox “Passage to Babylon,” nor the more energetic riffingcontained in “Willing Sprit” can ultimately jolt the album into ahigher plane of achievement, but then, Endorama still qualifiesamong Kreator’s most cohesive statements from this under-achievingdecade. And for what it’s worth, Endorama would also become thefinal chapter of the group’s experimental phase, which wasemphatically obliterated two years later by Kreator’s gloriouslythrashing rebirth via their magnificent tenth album, ViolentRevolution.
