Double album

Having formed in Hollywood in 1985 by former members ofHollywood Rose and L.A. Guns, Guns N Roses spent much of thefollowing year touring in an effort make a name for themselves. These early shows cemented the first stable line-up, featuring AxlRose, Slash, Duff McKagen, Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler. Gigs atrenowned venues such as The Troubadour and The Roxy caught theattention of major labels, and Guns N Roses signed to GeffenRecords in March 1986. In order to keep interest in the band alivewhilst they concentrated on recording their debut album, theyreleased the EP Live ?!*@ Like A Suicide, a faux-live record thatcontained an equal mix of covers and originals, two of which – MamaKin and Move To The City – would become concert staples in theyears to come. Appetite For Destruction was released on 21st July1987. This recording – broadcast live from Perkins Palace inPasadena, CA, on 30th December 1987 – took place just a few monthsfollowing the release of Appetite Of Destruction, when the boyswere still relatively unknown outside of their hometown. With theentire band in exceptional form throughout the performance here, this set is a rare example of Guns playing an early show whilealready clearly a musical force to be reckoned with.

The Guns N’ Roses backdrop lowered as the crowd cheered in afrenzy. The charismatic W. Axl Rose, clad in a pair of tight pants,T-shirt and boots, lead the rest of the boys into ”It’s So Easy,”from their ”Appetite For Destruction” album. The sound was a littletoo loud in the beginning, which made it difficult to understandRose clearly. Somewhere towards the end of the song, the soundengineer came to his senses and Rose became more audible. Guns N’Roses proceeded to play ”Move To The City” off their ”Live Like ASuicide” mini-LP and then the infamous ”Mr. Brownstone” whichnearly brought the house down. The show so far was going extremelywell. Then Axl gave his spiel on an incident that occurred theprior evening at a local club which led the band into ”Out Ta GetMe.” Guitarists Izzy Stradlin and Slash really tore into this songand displayed fine teamwork along with Bassist Duff McKagan. Theyfollowed suit with the evertouching ”Sweet Child O’ Mine.” Thestage for this song was perfectly set with kaleidoscope lights anddry ice, setting the mood for Axl’s soulful singing which he did sowell, it could give a gospel choir a run for their money. Next camea new song, ”Used To Love Her” which was well-received with theaudience. ”My Michelle” followed with full force and power as did”Rocket Queen.” In the middle of ”Rocket Queen,” the temp changessent the audience into a zealous hand-clapping fury. Guns N’ Roseshad the house up in arms…literally. The real tightness that theband possesses became evident in a fine rendition of “Knockin’ OnHeaven’s Door” which they dedicated to the late Todd Crew ofJetboy. Axl was trying to make some valid points in relation to theresponsibility of taking drugs, but some callous people in theaudience kept interrupting him. Disgusted, Rose told the loudmouthsto “Shut the fuck up!” which made everyone cheer. It was at thispoint that the drummer Steven Adler (out of commission due to aninjured hand) introduced substitute drummer Fred Coury ofCinderella. Coury did a fine job filling in, and Guns N’ Rosescontinued with ”You’re Crazy.” Then both Axl and Slash introducedeveryone in the band and they did it perfectly, so not a singlename was slurred or lost. Slash spearheaded into a new instrumentalsong (title unannounced). This song enabled all members in the bandto showcase their talent without any lengthy solos. Steven Adlerjoined Coury to share drumming duties on this very blues-influencednumber. ”Nightrain” ended the set before the first encore. Amongthe encores were a new song entitled ”Patience” and a cover ofAerosmith’s ”Mama Kin.” Guns N’ Roses played an outstanding setthat was beyond comparison. A rejuvenation in the local andnational rock scene has long been overdue and Guns N’ Roses haverisen to the occasion. A very real band not to be missed!
