Bauhaus Archive Berlin Museum of Design The collection

When in 1960 the Bauhaus Archive was founded as a non-profit association, the goal was set to collect all ”documents related to the activities and cultural philosophy of the Bauhaus” and make these accessible to the public. Now, after 45 years of committed collecting, the Bauhaus Archive owns the worldwide largest collection on the theme of the Bauhaus.

With the support of the Bauhaus masters, most of whom had to leave Germany
after 1933, and of many former students, Hans Maria Wingler, founder and first director of the Bauhaus Archive, began building up the collection. Walter Gropius laid the foundations by donating his vast personal archive on the Bauhaus, in addition to which he also supplied the design for an adequate building. This was to open 1979 in Berlin, where the Bauhaus Archive had by then moved to, hence carrying the subtitle “Museum of Design”. The building with its striking shed roof silhouette was listed in 1979 and belongs today to the architectural sights of the German capital.
