If you are unfamiliar with London-basedOfficer Kicks, you can be forgiven: in their own biography theydeclare: if success was measured by fame or money then we would bein the bottom of a barrel marked invalid and my musical life (all10 years of it) would be labelled the LONG void. They are wellaware of the hardships that feed into the stereotypical musician´slifestyle. Having been dropped by their first label before gettinganywhere, Jamie Scallion, Keith Wickham, Jamie Fisher, and MichaelSkorjanec started back at square one, playing successful debutalbum. Citywide Curfew, is their second album since regrouping andits a fierce collection of straight up rock. With mostlyguitar-heavy songs it is high in energy, and the range is completedby a few slower piano-based tunes. Despite comprising of undeniablyrock tunes, the album has something indie-pop about it. Reviewshave likened them to a fusion of Led Zeppelin and Arctic Monkeys -a concept that may alarm diehard fans of either band, yet quitesuccessfully captures the balance struck between heavy and crowdpleasing. In many respects this is the kind of band that can crossgenerations - think the early career energy of the Police, lashingof guitar overdrive , the stadium sound of U2 and by the end therootsy feel of Kings of Leon - they deal in rip straight to thejugular songs and powerhouse riffs. On top of that there´s themagnificent vocals of Jamie Scallion who is not averse to poachingthe occasional Liam Gallagher sneer. But then again why wouldn´the, as this is a band that is the musical equivalent of atransformer, turning some recognizable musical influences intosomething all of their own making. City Wide Curfew is a cracker ofan album and their scorching brand of rock & roll is aninternational language that looks set to launch them to an equallybig crossover audience.
