One EP, then lost in obscurity. Swedish 80s heavy metal saw as many such bands as the next one. Some of them with real gems of EPs, such as Zone Zero, Nattsvart and Onyx, the latter now next up to receive the archival compilation treatment. The four tracks on the eponymous 1982 7” are largely take no prisoners, early Maidenish heavy metal, with lore-like feel and a becoming gloom not miles apart from the second Jonah Quizz demo. With that band, Onyx also shared the choice of singing in Swedish, though rather about Charon and Nosferatu than the “Mystiska 2:an” like social realism of JQ. And, above all, they both had melodies you won’t soon forget. The four EP tracks are here joined by the (also real good) demo recording the band did the following year, making for a fine album experience.
