Split has roots going all the way back to Roman times. Around the beginning of the 4th century, Roman Emperor Diocletian built a huge palace here — today known as Diocletian’s Palace. The fun part is that it isn’t just a palace ruin you look at from a distance. Over the centuries, streets, homes, cafés and shops grew within and around it, so when you wander through Split’s old town today, you’re actually walking among pieces of ancient Roman history.
