From the beginning, Last Crack rehearsals were likemini-concerts. Friends would show up to party while the band honedtheir sound and crafted their songs. For Buddo, the writing was onthe wall. Literally. He wrote poetry and quotes with a sharpeemarker all over the walls of the storage unit. It would be calledthe ?Sinister Funkhouse #17? and the poetry on the walls wouldbecome the lyrics for the band's first album of the same name.?Sinister Funkhouse #17? shows the completely raw energy of whatwas to come of this great, but seldom heard of Mid-Western band.Recorded at Prince's famed studio, Paisley Park in Minneapolis,Last Crack were able to make their heavy rock, groove laden, tonguein cheek humor into a reality. Silly song titles, in all. More onthat later. ?Funkhouse? is first of all a very fun and looserecord. Singer, only known as Buddo, makes sure of that. One of theclaims to fame for Last Crack was the album/CD cover art for thisdebut. Back in 1989 this cover was very controversial. A fullynaked Buddo in somewhat of an archery type of pose, did serve themwell and caused a buzz for the band. As silly and fun as Buddo iswith his John Bush (Armored Saint/Anthrax) with a bit of Phil Lewis(Girl/L.A. Guns) themed vocals, guitar duo Don Bakken and PaulSchluter, play their guitar wizard roles as serious as a heartattack, filling this record with great solos and rifferagethroughout. While the rhythm section of drummer Phil Buerstatte andbassist Todd Winger set the table for Last Crack's often intricateand groove filled Metal. Last Crack obviously had a good sense ofhumor to go along with their musical chops. Song titles like "GushVolcano Crush" and "Blood Brothers of the Big Black Bear" are notused if you can't back them up. And while cutting their teeth onthis first major release, songs like "Slicing Steel", "Terse" andthe down right funky "Saraboyscage" all show how diverse andmenacing they are capable of being. While recorded at a world classstudio like Paisley Park, the production of this debut sounds justthat, a debut. Very under produced, probably because they weren'tgiven much of a budget to record with. Remember this was 1989 andnot like today with the "Pro Tools" generation of making a millionseller CD in your bathroom. The songs show promise, but the lack ofproduction does take away from the overall product. Last Crack is aband to check out. The songs on this debut don't sound dated, butthe production does. So listen with an open mind. The talent isthere, but unfortunately the lackluster production isn't. If youlike bands like King's X, Mindfunk, Icon and Armored Saint then youshould dig Last Crack.
