Joey Belladonna(real name: Joseph Bellardini) is best-known as the singer for NewYork City thrash metallists Anthrax during the most successfulphase of their career (the mid-’80s through the early ’90s), butthe frontman has also issued several albums on his own afterleaving the group. His solo project was simply called Belladonna, which has thus far issued a two albums, 1995’s self-titled debutand 1998’s Spells Of Fear. In the 90s man thrash metal bandsstarted backing down on speed and intensity, in favor of a lighter, more groove based and straight up heavy metal sound trying to fitin with the new grunge moment. Their are plenty of riffs on herebut the overall guitar tone is quite light sounding morealternative rock than metal. Thats a shame as the album is clearlydriven by riffs and not melodies and good old Anthrax held somecatchiness in their vocals and melodies from time to time, butneedless to say its not just the melodies in the music that islacking even Belladonnas voice sometimes sounds flat and powerless. The whole things is a very straight and raw album with simple songstructure. The album took Mr Belladonna nowhere but fans of the manand Anthrax will probably keep this in their collection anyway.
