The book is set in the in-game year 2070. After the massive global computer crash of 2064 ( The Crash of 2064 ), the global network was rebuilt as a completely wireless Matrix based on Augmented Reality (AR).

After the crash, a small percentage of the population mutated. These individuals developed the ability to manipulate and hack the digital, wireless Matrix with their own minds alone – without the use of cyberware or physical data terminals. When the existence of these technomancers becomes headline news in 2070, it triggers global paranoia, technological witch hunts, and political chaos. The campaign draws the player characters (Shadowrunners) directly into these pivotal events
