Beskrivelse
SEIKO Zig Zag Triangle Wall Clock Japan Postmodern Design 1980s
For shop display use marking is present
—————
Era and identification:
Authentic SEIKO Zig Zag series wall clock, manufactured in Japan during the 1980s. The movement is marked SEIKOSHA CO., LTD., NO JEWELS, PAT. PEND., JAPAN, confirming Japanese production from the period when SEIKO experimented with bold geometric interior designs.
The rear label indicates the PH441 series. A molded Japanese marking reading ?????(for shop display use) is present on the casing, suggesting this example was supplied for retail display or promotional purposes. The exact distribution history is undocumented, but the marking itself is factory molded rather than later applied.
—————
Design:
One of the most striking Japanese postmodern clock designs produced by SEIKO.
The entire composition is built around inverted triangles layered in three dimensions. Rather than using a conventional circular dial, the design combines:
• Large black triangular outer frame
• Metallic silver intermediate layer
• Floating black dial with red geometric accents
• Minimalist white hands and markers
The black, red, white and metallic color palette is strongly associated with 1980s postmodern and Memphis-inspired interior design. Even today the clock looks more like a piece of wall sculpture than a traditional timepiece.
The layered construction creates impressive depth when viewed from the side and casts interesting shadows depending on lighting conditions.
As a vintage design object, it works particularly well in modernist, industrial, postmodern, Memphis, loft, studio or collector-oriented interiors.

The clock is working and keeping time.
Original hands, dial, logo and decorative elements remain present.
Light age-related cosmetic wear is visible from normal use and storage over several decades, including minor marks and surface scratches consistent with vintage ownership.
The metallic center section shows visible surface wear and scratching when viewed closely under strong light, as shown in the photographs.
No major structural damage noted.
—————
History:
The 1980s represented a dramatic shift in industrial design. Designers increasingly moved away from purely functional forms and embraced bold geometry, visual playfulness and architectural shapes.
Japanese manufacturers participated enthusiastically in this movement, producing radios, furniture, lamps and clocks that reflected the influence of international postmodern design trends.
The Zig Zag series belongs to this era. Unlike traditional clocks designed to disappear into a room, these pieces were intended to become part of the room’s visual identity.
Today, original Japanese postmodern clocks from the 1980s are increasingly collected alongside Memphis Milano furniture, space-age lighting and geometric interior objects because relatively few survived in attractive original condition.
The unusual factory-molded “Tento-You” in Japanese marking adds an additional layer of interest for collectors of Japanese retail display pieces and SEIKO memorabilia.
—————
Important vintage note:
This is a vintage second-hand item. Minor imperfections, slight color differences, light wear, and variations due to screen settings are natural and expected with age. These characteristics are part of the item’s history and authenticity. Post-purchase discount requests based on minor vintage traits will not be accepted. If you are looking for a perfect, mint condition item, please avoid this.
