Robert Aldrich directs this revisionist western starring Burt Lancaster. Massai (Lancaster) is the last Apache warrior to refuse to surrender after Geronimo's defeat in 1886. Transported to Florida as a prisoner, he escapes and makes his way back to Arizona, where he refuses to live on the reservation and instead tries to build a life as a farmer while evading the US Army. A sympathetic, complex portrayal of Native American resistance and the violence of American expansion. Features the final confrontation between two incompatible visions of the American West.
