Howard Hawks directs his final film, this late western starring John Wayne. During the Civil War, Union Colonel Cord McNally (Wayne) is robbed of a gold shipment by Confederate forces with the help of a Union traitor. After the war, McNally teams up with two of the Confederate soldiers who robbed him — Pierre Cordona (Jorge Rivero) and Tuscarora (Christopher Mitchum) — to track down the traitor and a corrupt sheriff who is terrorising a small Texas town. A relaxed, amiable Wayne vehicle that serves as a fond farewell to the western genre from one of its greatest directors.
