Chilling and unique third solo albumfrom Italian multi-instrumentalist Regen Graves best known for hiswork with Abysmal Grief, a band well known in Doom Metal circles.The album title means Autumn Light in German and with song titlesthat translate to Empty Streets, The First Snow and Decompositionthat relate to the striking cover image it’s obvious thatHerbstlicht is not the go to album to play as you’re getting readyto go out on a Friday night. It is, however, a compellingsoundscape which, although given the song titles and cover imagesuggests a chilling, unsettling journey, is strangely calming;while the listener might well be expecting to be filled with dreadwhile listening to the album the end result, to these ears, was arelaxing journey. While the six tracks threaten to take you toplaces you think you’d rather not visit it’s one of those journeysthat you just have to complete. The synth sounds that inform thepieces on Herbstlicht do make for an unsettling atmosphere and theghostly voices and other unfathomable sounds which weave in and outof each song add to the overall eeriness of the album but there’sstill this beauty, this unsettled beauty, that breaks through thedarkness to offer comfort. Regen Graves has produced a musicaljourney that although set in darkness has a greater calming effecton the listener than many of these so-called chill-out albums. Ifyoure a fan of dark ambient, spooky albums and Abysmal Grief thenthis is for you.
