Ex-MercyfulFate guitarists Michael Denner and Hank shermann have beeninvolved, individually or collectively, in a myriad of projectsover the years (Force of Evil, Demonica, Shermann Tank etc.) andnone have successfully conjured the dark magic of Mercyful Fate.Satan’s Tomb definitely comes the closest, and for that alone Iconsider it a big success. The riffs have that traditional metalfeel with a dark, sinister edge and are reminiscent, if not quiteas classic, as old Mercyful Fate. Sean Peck of the metal band Cagehandles the vocals and his Ripper Owens-like style fits the musicand atmosphere of the material perfectly. On the downside, thesongs make you wish for a new Mercyful Fate album, complete withKing Diamond and Timi Hansen joining the fray. From all accounts,that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. In the meantime, let’senjoy Satan’s Tomb and hope it sells well enough to convinceeveryone involved that a follow-up, full length album would be wellworth the time and effort.
