The Finnish heavy metal band Sentenced was born in Oulu in 1989as a death metal act. The band released three demos up to 1992 andthe release of their debut album Shadows Of The Past. These threedemos have now been released on this album. These three demos showsthat even at this formative stage, the four-piece were showing aninclination to expand from heavy riffing and Miika Tenkula´sripping growls. Considering the contemporary condition of deathmetal in 1990, the mix of influences refreshes the notion of localcliques meaning that Sentenced play about with thrashy riffingstraight from Death´s original template, then mow the listener downwith more powerful grooves initiated by Obituary, plus a few hintsof technicality and melodicism that were rarely combined into acoherent whole. As it is, some of the pieces on this demo feel likejust that - pieces, not songs - perhaps because Sentenced simplysewed together the most interesting parts they could write intomostly linear compositions. As such, the style cannot be calledparticularly catchy even if it remains accessible by extreme metalstandards, the melodic flashes of soloing and congruent riffingleaving this with a similar feeling to early material from At TheGates in the way that the listener quickly gets to grips with anyheaviness and complexity. The early demos is a worthy companionpieces to the debut album Shadows Of The Past.
