Having taken longer than most of Gothenburg, Sweden’s deathmetal giants to reveal their greatness, Dark Tranquility have nowarguably become that ever-popular subgenre’s most enduringtorch-bearers — the living embodiment of melodic death metal midwaythrough the ’00s. And, in keeping with that station, 2005’sCharacter marks the third installment of what most agree has beenthe band’s most consistent career-phase; one which finds them, likeother genre standard-bearers before them (Iron Maiden, AC/DC, BlackSabbath, anyone?), reveling in their mastery of a formula they knowso well it inevitably begs the question: have they become toocomfortable in their niche? Are they stagnating? Well, there’s adistinct difference between beating a dead horse and riding it tovictory every time, and Character sure feels like the latter, assong after memorable song storms by all limbs a-flailing anddeath-shrieks a-shrieking, their riffs and harmonies stacked asdensely as only Dark Tranquility can stack them. If anything, thisouting follows a slightly more straightforward and aggressive tactthan its two acclaimed predecessors, using well-placed synthesizerbreaks and melodies to heighten, not suffocate, the ferociousonslaught driving the nearly black metal barrage of “The NewBuild,” the overpowering fury of “Lost to Apathy,” and thebrilliantly schizophrenic “Dry Run.” In fact, only the ratherelectronics-heavy “The Endless Feed” and the especially emotivequasi-ballad “My Negation” ever manage to distract us from thedominant maelstroms raging here. Admittedly, there’s probably nosingle perfect offering on Character on par with Haven’s “Not Builtto Last” or Damage Done’s “Cathode Ray Sunshine,” but there’s alsono real weak links to speak of, either — perhaps theless-than-marvelous, “Mind Matters” and “Am I 1?” But, for allintents and purposes, what we have here is quite simplystate-of-the-art melodic death metal.
