The Tam o' Shanter stone is a type of Water of Ayr stone (also known as a Scotch stone or snake stone) from Scotland, used for sharpening and polishing metals and other surfaces (dry: pic 5, wet: pic 7&9)

The Water of Ayr stone is a fine-grained, natural Scottish honing and polishing stone used by jewelers for removing marks and polishing metals, and by barbers for razor finishing (dry: pic 4, wet: pic 6&8)

The stone's side label has been carefully unglued so it doesn't get damaged with use (see pic 2)
