The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications put into circulation on 25th August 1994 a set of two special stamps. They depict Zhaojun and the situation of her leaving home to Xiongnu. This souvenir sheet, FDC, presents the marriage.
In 33 B.C. when the monarch of Xiongnu, a northern nationality in China, came to the emperor of the Han Dynasty in an attempt to cement the relationship by asking for marriage to a girl from the Han court. Zhaojun voluntarily applied to marry him. The emperor approved her request. She went with the monarch to Xiongnu and became his wife.
The marriage played a remarkable role for the harmony between the Han Dynasty and Xiongnu. Zhaojun’s story got so popular that it was repeatedly featured as the source material for poems, paintings and dramas in various dynasties.
