You’ve heard the best, now here’s the rest. Just a year afterthe average Status Quo fan figured he’d already been fed as much ashe needed from the group’s first four years of life, along camethis set to heap even more proto-boogie and poppy psych on to theturntable — and, really, if you’d already bought all the othercomps out there, it was round about now that you started wishingyou’d just put out for the original albums instead. After all,you’d bought them twice over already. In terms of the actual music,of course, there’s nothing wrong with The Rest Of Status Quo. As apsychedelic band, Status Quo were at least as good as a lot of theother bands whom history now worships so blindly — indeed, ifthey’d never returned after the opening burst of “Pictures OfMatchstick Men” and “Ice In The Sun,” they’d be up there with theIdle Race and the Smoke in most enthusiasts’ estimation. But theydid return, and they got so huge that every note they’d everuttered in the past was deemed ripe for endless recycling. And youcan tell from this set’s title that even the label was gettingbored with the process.
