This model is targeting Windows computers and laptops with a bit of flexibility to what kind of setup you are looking for. In some aspects, offering some familiar features of a TB3 dock (only with the over-all bandwidth and limitations of USB-C). This actually makes for an interesting approach when it comes to USB-C docking stations as it gives you the ability to switch between performance and resolution. Each having its own benefits depending on the setup you are looking to achieve. The mentioned switch is located at the bottom of the dock. It bounces between 4K 30Hz and 4K 60Hz and sets in motion two different scenarios for its overall specs.

4K60Hz

If you prefer a setup with one to three external 4K monitors at 60Hz, then you clearly want to choose 4K 60Hz. This prioritizes resolution over performance. It allows you to connect one to three external screens to your computer or laptop at full resolution. The compromise, however, is that the USB ports drop to 2.0 speeds (480Mbps) and the Ethernet port to 100Mbps (the SD reader speeds are affected as well). This may be fine for those in demand of the resolution.
Then again, all of this is dependant upon everything connected. Clearly, everything needs to support DisplayPort 1.4 for this to work properly. If your setup is limited to DP1.2, then the resolutions and/or refresh rate will be less depending on the number of monitors plugged in (in some cases, dropping to 1080p@60 if three monitors are connected on such a setup).

4K30Hz

If you aren’t rocking 4K screens and prefer to stick to 1080p or 1440p, you can switch over to 4K 30Hz mode. You can still have up to two monitors at 4K 60Hz, but if you connect a third, then everything will drop to 30Hz refresh. However, if you stick to 1080p, you should get 60Hz across them all.
Once again, this is dependent upon everything being DP1.4 compliant. If your setup is DP1.2, then you will be limited to one 4K@30 screen, or two 1080p@60 screens, or three 1600×900@60Hz screens.
The benefit of this mode, however, is that everything else speeds up. Your USB ports all become USB 3.1 (10Gbps), and your Ethernet becomes a gigabit connection. So this is for those looking for speed everywhere else without the need for high-resolution monitors.
