ABOUT SSA STANDARD

SSA is an interface between computer systems and peripherals which offers a full-duplex serial, frame multiplexed approach to connectivity of storage devices, storage subsystems, servers, workstations and PCs. "SSA solves the SCSI I/O bottleneck problems which are common in the PCI market, and therefore customer interest in SSA is growing rapidly," observed Alex Lieb, Pathlight's vice president of Sales, "SSA offers an ideal combination of high performance, high capacity, high reliability, and low cost which older generation storage interfaces can not match."

Pathlight's PCI adapter design represents a unique blend of software, firmware, and hardware elements. The design is optimized to handle high volumes of I/O requests, and to provide the extremely high overall throughput necessary in the PCI server marketplace. The StreamLine-PCI adapter can connect up to 128 SSA devices, and service over 4000 I/O requests per second. Throughput performance is equally impressive, offering 132 MB/second peak PCI burst rates, and 70 MB/second sustained data transfer rates.

The StreamLine-PCI adapter comes complete with a ready-to install Novell NetWare(TM) device driver. Additional drivers, for Windows-NT(TM), UnixWare(TM) and other operating systems, will follow in a second quarter 1995 release. Regardless of the operating system chosen, transition to SSA will be seamless, since Pathlight drivers allow SSA devices to be mounted on existing OS file systems, using SCSI command structures already familiar to users.
