In 1988 Death SS released the ultra legendary debut horror metalmasterpiece `In Death Of Steve Sylvester´. Misunderstood by themainstream press of that time and also rather badly distributedoutside of their native Italy, the album has since then become acult favourite for many and the original LP is a masterpiece soughtafter by many. Seldom has an album so heavily summed up the wordhorror with classic cuts like `Vampire´, `Terror´ and theincredible acoustic `The Hanged Ballad´. After the good debut, theyreached the top with the great album, `Black Mass´. Occultcontents, cemetery visions and an horror image created a mysterythe surrounded the band. Their music can be seen as a great mix ofclassic heavy metal with speed/thrash influences. The face pantingand the lyrics content contributed to create a black metal image,along with some instruments and atmospheres typical of the band.They are the kings of evil, as they proclaim in the album's firsttrack and considering all that I said before, you must believethem. The occult can be found in each single track, being a futureinspiration for lots of group. In that period the Italian pioneersof death and black metal were releasing their first albums or demos(Mortuary Drape, Bulldozer and Necrodeath, ex-Ghostrider) and DeathSS contributed to their image and sound. In this album each group'sinfluence is well balanced and very intense, producing band´sclassics like the scary Horrible Eyes or the great Cursed Mama,with a great organ intro to celebrate a true black mass. Gregorianchants and samplers can be found in the long title track. Thelegends behind the group's history and the moniker Death SS makethe listeners' morbid curiosity grow.
