City Boy was a Birmingham based quintet that produced some fine melodic and progressive rock tunes during the second half of the 70s. However the band started out as an acoustic folk group, as can be on this first album. It ranges from blues/funk tunes to mellow AOR songs to progressive, melodic tracks -- there's something on the album for most everyone to like. From the Sweet-ish anthem The Greatest Story Ever Told to the quirky Oddball Dance, City Boy is an eclectic, interesting and notable introduction. The last track, Haymaking Time, is one of the sweetest songs by the band and it sound more like a late 60s Simon And Garfunkel track then anything the band recorded later on. However, the outro is dominated by a very beautiful electric guitar solo, being a nice contrast. Not only is the melody lovely and the voices wonderful, it tells a heartbreaking story of the end (or the impending end) of a relationship in which, at least I think, one of the parties does not want to end. This is clear to me by the loving way the surroundings and feelings are written about. Although the folk song arrangement makes this song sound different from most other City Boy songs, it is something very City boyish about it. Mike Slamers solo at the end being the only real, somewhat rock element (a sort of precursor to his Goodbye Laurelie solo). This is a great song that is easily lost next to the rest of their catalogue, but shouldn't be.
