Marduk’s seventh release La GrandeDanse Macabre, somewhat divided their fan base when it was firstunveiled back in 2001. Featuring a bunch of songs that slowedthings down quite a bit, longtime followers of this Swedish blackmetal contingent cried out in anger that the band’s trademark blastbeat frenzy was toned down quite a bit. In all honesty, La GrandeDanse Macabre is a wonderful change of pace from the non-stopbrutality of albums like Panzer Division Marduk or Heaven ShallBurn When We Are Gathered, both classic albums no doubt, but aslight respite was needed and La Grande Danse Macabre deliveredthat change. In late 2001 Marduk joined forces with some of theheaviest acts in metal on the X-Mass Festivals through Europe. In2001 they were joined by Cannibal Corpse, Kreator, Nile, Krisiunand Vomitory. This album was recorded during that tour at theZeche Carl in Essen Germany on the 12th of December. The sound ispretty decent and Legion is at his best here, awash in fake bloodand interacting greatly with the crowd, who are flailing aboutobviously enjoying themselves immensely.
