If Emperor,Immortal, Mayhem, and Cradle of Filth are the familial DonCorleones of the genre, Marduk could be their hired thug, a weaponsspecialist not afraid to get dirty hands while taking care ofbusiness. That being said, Marduk has unfortunately been aperennial second-tier outfit, although La Grande Danse Macabre, theband’s seventh full-length studio release, is its most accomplishedand varied work to date. Those disappointed by the blastbeatoverload of previous album Panzer Division Marduk will bepleasantly surprised to gander at the grotesque, club-footed cavebeast that is La Grande Danse Macabre: A few grandiose songstructures, plenty of tempo variations (blasting drums are stillabundant, if not as prevalent), gleefully blasphemous lyricalexhortations, and a crisp, clean Abyss Studios production.
