Could this actually be European death metal’s bid for a popculture coup? In Flames already has a reputation as one of thebest, most melodic death metal bands to come to power in theEuro-metal regime that has swept through countries like Sweden andNorway since the early to mid-’90s. However, with Reroute toRemain, Strömblad and the gang have now unexpectedly announced thatthey are also undoubtedly the most experimental of their brethren,and furthermore, that they have set their sights not just onbroader horizons, but perhaps even complete world domination aswell. Maybe that sounds like a huge exaggeration, but even one spinof the 14 songs here will prove that it very possibly may not be.It’s obvious that the band has been listening heavily to thepopular American metal (nu-metal, rap-metal, etc.) acts of themoment, because most of their venturing heads in that direction; infact, it’s almost as if catchy American-sounding choruses andcertain nu-metal attributes have been added to the intense,throttling mixture of the band’s already memorable songcraft. “DarkSigns,” “Minus,” and the title track each contain choruses thatcould have easily come from bands like Linkin Park or Papa Roach.Actually, most of the songs share these traits, but those aren’tthe only changes in approach. There is also the laid-back,Incubus-like electronica of the verses in “Dawn of a New Day”(arguably the album’s best song), the short bursts of hip-hop-stylebeat sampling in “Trigger,” and “Metaphor,” which, at times, almostsounds — well, country. As usual, the highly melodic songwritingand Master of Puppets-era riffage In Flames is known for are intactand remain unspoiled despite the many additions. This isn’t to saythat all of the band’s experiments work; there are a few that justsimply don’t. Still, it’s surprising how flawlessly andharmoniously most of the new qualities behave with the old; none ofthe experimentations ever really come off as forced or throwntogether. Nothing here is ever so far removed from Colony orClayman as to give the impression that the band is suddenly tryingto be something it is not. Reroute to Remain is the kind of albumthat will attract many new fans and give the band a wider range ofappeal without sacrificing or alienating its core fan base and thepeople that have been behind the group for years. Is it the kind ofalbum that will break In Flames through to mainstream metalaudiences
