The more than 1100 examples shown are classified precisely and beyond dispute as to period and provenance. In effect, these pieces, shown in large photographs with details clearly defined, serve as hallmarks and aid the reader in verifying and identifying almost any piece of antique furniture. As a result, many pieces of uncertain period and origin can be identified definitely because of their similarity and relationship to the pieces shown in the book. And identifications already made can be confirmed or proved erroneous in the same way. The authority of this Directory is conclusive. F. Lewis Hinckley is the leading furniture technologist in the United States. His judgment is respected by prominent owners of antique English and French furniture. In the American field, he has appraised some of the most notable collections, acting in this capacity also for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He is well known in Europe for his original work in tracing designs to their proper sources of origin.
