Roberto Rossellini is one of the most influential filmmakers ofall time. And it was with his trilogy of films made during andafter World War II—Rome Open City, Paisan, and Germany YearZero—that he left his first transformative mark on cinema. Withtheir stripped-down aesthetic, largely nonprofessional casts, andunorthodox approaches to storytelling, these intensely emotionalworks were international sensations and came to define theneorealist movement. Shot in battle-ravaged Italy and Germany, these three films are some of our most lasting, humane documents ofdevastated postwar Europe, containing universal images of bothtragedy and hope.

De tre filmerna I boxen är:

Rome Open City 1945
This was Roberto Rossellini’s revelation, a harrowing drama aboutthe Nazi occupation of Rome and the brave few who struggled againstit. Though told with more melodramatic flair than the films thatwould follow it to form The War Trilogy and starring somewell-known actors—Aldo Fabrizi as a priest helping the partisancause and Anna Magnani in her breakthrough role as the fiancée of aresistance member—Rome Open City is a shockingly authenticexperience, conceived and directed amid the ruin of World War II,with immediacy in every frame. Marking a watershed moment inItalian cinema, this galvanic work garnered awards around the globeand left the beginnings of a new film movement in its wake.

Paisan 1946
Roberto Rossellini’s follow-up to his breakout Rome Open City wasthe ambitious, enormously moving Paisan, which consists of sixepisodes set during the liberation of Italy at the end of World WarII, and taking place across the country, from Sicily to thenorthern Po valley. With its documentary-like visuals andintermingled cast of actors and nonprofessionals, Italians andtheir American liberators, this look at the struggles of differentcultures to communicate and of people to live their everyday livesin extreme circumstances is equal parts charming sentiment andvivid reality. A long-missing treasure of Italian cinema, Paisan isavailable here in its full original release version.

Germany Year Zero 1948
The concluding chapter of Roberto Rossellini’s War Trilogy is themost devastating, a portrait of an obliterated Berlin, seen throughthe eyes of a twelve-year-old boy. Living in a bombed-out apartmentbuilding with his sick father and two older siblings, young Edmundis mostly left to wander unsupervised, getting ensnared in theblack-market schemes of a group of teenagers and coming under thenefarious influence of a Nazi-sympathizing ex-teacher. Germany YearZero is a daring, gut-wrenching look at the consequences offascism, for society and the individual.
