Tips for private car sales
When you buy a car from a private individual, you enter into a binding agreement. Take your time to gather as much information as possible before completing the purchase.
Purchases of vehicles with the listing format “For sale” are always handled outside of Tradera, therefore never send money in advance.
Before you buy
- Private purchases are binding – review the terms carefully.
- Defects discovered after purchase can normally not be claimed.
- Ask for a purchase agreement and preferably check the vehicle’s ownership history.
Check information
- Make sure the seller is the registered owner of the vehicle.
- Check that the vehicle is fully paid for and free of debt.
- Ensure that the vehicle is not subject to a retention of title (common with installment payments).
- Check that the service book and vehicle details are correct.
Inspect the vehicle
- Always inspect and test drive the vehicle.
- Make sure the vehicle’s condition and equipment match the listing.
- Pay extra attention to deviations – it’s better to ask once too often.
Changing of ownership
- Buyer and seller report the change of ownership to the Swedish Transport Agency.
- The change of ownership can be done via app or registration certificate.
- As the new owner, you must take out traffic insurance on the same day the ownership change takes place.
