Soup is the second studio album by American rock band BlindMelon, released on August 15, 1995, under the production of Nirvanaand Rage Against The Machine’s producer, Andy Wallace (who is onthe front album cover). The album was released just a mere 2 monthsbefore Shannon Hoon’s fatal cocaine overdose. The songs on Soup usemuch tighter and more intricate guitar arrangements than theirprevious album. It is skillfully structured and introspective interms of the songwriting. Hoon wrote all of the lyrics for thealbum himself, and they mostly revolve around themes ofself-deprecating insecurities and the immobilizing uncertainty ofdrug addiction. Hoon was indeed channeling his inner most turmoilsinto a creative and painstakingly honest work of art, which iscompletely devastating in hindsight. Initially overlooked, Soup wasabsolutely the statement of a band at their creative peak. Theymanaged to not only surpass what they had done on their firstrecord in terms of their musical compositions, but they alsoestablish themselves as a rare and unrivaled commodity in an erathat was more concerned with trivial MTV garbage. The album itselfhad mixed reviews, which many believe played a part in Hoon’sunfortunate and untimely death. It reached number 28 on the USBillboard 200 albums chart. Soup utterly exceeds Blind Melon interms of structure, formula and lyrics, but it unfortunately didn’tdo enough to shake the “bee girl” image from the public’sconscious.
