Vintage special one, massive brutalist silver pendant with necklace from the Kaarna (Finnish for Tree bark) series. Made by renowned Finnish designer Pentti Sapraneva.
Why it’s so cool? Sarpaneva excelled as a jewelry designer by skillfully merging tradition and the essence of Finnish nature into contemporary midcentury forms.
A notable breakthrough in Sarpaneva’s Kaarna, Kelo and some other collections in 1970 was the fusion of Finnish gemstones with bronze and silver jewelry.
Dimensions: pendant length is 8 cm, necklace length is 65 cm. Weight is 45g.
1970s. Turun hopea jewelry production, Finland. Excellent vintage condition.
Form:
It has a rough, layered vertical shape that resembles stacked natural material.
Main body: Tall and irregular, made of horizontal ridges or strips. These elements look like uneven pieces pressed together, with gaps and texture between them.
Uneven, textured surface, almost raw-looking, not smooth or polished. It gives the impression of something organic or weathered. A smooth silver ball sits in the middle, standing out sharply against the rough background. Two small silver spheres hang freely. They are kinetic, so they swing or move when worn.
The design seems to reflect the idea of bark: a protective rough exterior. But the moving balls below suggest movement or hidden energy beneath the surface.
