(1905–1965)
He trained at the Bolshoi Ballet School (Moscow Theatre School) with Alexander Gorsky and Vasily Tikhomirov. He joined the company in 1924 and was a soloist there until his retirement in 1952. He was one of the most acclaimed of the Bolshoi's dancers and excelled in both traditional and modern roles. His partnership with Ulanova was greatly admired. He created roles in the ballets: The Flames of Paris, The Prisoner of the Caucasus, Taras Bulba, Zakharov's Cinderella and his version of Romeo and Juliet. He was honored as a People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1951. Gabovich was also a recipient of the Stalin Prize in 1946 and 1950, reflecting his significant contributions to the performing arts in the Soviet Union He directed the Bolshoi School from 1954-1958 and taught there until his death.
